Altered Canvas with Working Clock Tutorial

Good morning everyone :)

We have a wonderful Altered Canvas with Working Clock tutorial to share with you all today by our very own crafty Debbie Moore

This is my tutorial on how to alter a canvas and have a working clock on it too.  This tutorial was inspired by our lovely Estelle – thank you Estelle.  :)

You will need:
White canvas - 20cm x 20cm (8x8inches)
Acrylic paints - White, Mid Yellow, Burnt Umber
Pocket Watch & Elements Set available from The Crafty Pad Designs HERE
& Sentiment Quotes HERE
Working Clock hands and mechanism (5cm minute hand, 4cm hour hand, 2 1/2inches minute hand, 1 1/2 inches hour hand)
3 Scallop Circles 4.5cm (1 3/4inches)
Mossy Stone ink pad or similar
Rangers 'Heirloom Gold' Perfect Pearls
Expresso Alcohol Ink & length of chain (optional)
Chipboard key or old brooch etc
Cotton Lace
Selection of flowers and buttons

Mix a small amount of Mid Yellow paint with the White and paint over whole canvas.
Set aside to dry thoroughly.

Now using the Burnt Umber and some damp kitchen paper apply the paint quickly in swiping streaks using different pressures.  Rub off some paint to allow the lower layer to show through, giving a distressed look.  Tip you can lightly spritz the canvas with water before applying the Burnt Umber.  Set aside to dry thoroughly.

When the canvas is dry spritz lightly with water and brush the Perfect Pearls 'Heirloom Gold' over to achieve your desired effect.

Print off the Pocket Watch, Ruler & Cogs
onto Cream coloured card stock.
Size the pocket watch 8.5cm (3 1/4 inches)
Size the Ruler 13cm long (5 1/4inches)
Size the cogs 5.5cm at widest point (2 1/4 inches) - print two sets.
Using the Mossy Stone Ink Pad or similar apply the ink to the Pocket watch set
and also to the 3 scallop circles.

Colour your chain and old brooch or similar with the Expresso Alcohol Ink.  Use chipboard key or shape if you do not have old suitable brooch.  If you do not have a chain then some fibres or wire would suffice.
Adhere your flowers and button together.
Optional - I have used 3 Posh Pins that I made and also a length of Ivory coloured plastic pearls.

Now time to start adding your elements. :) Use the above image to show where to place your elements.
Adhere your lace using DS tape.
Adhere using  PVA glue the scallop circles to the 2 lower corners and other as shown above.
Adhere the ruler & cogs as shown.
The Sentiment has been adhered using 3D pads.
Do Not add any elements yet that require silicone!

Time to add your working clock the instructions that came with your clock as they will vary. :)
Place the Pocket Watch image in  position using 3D foam pads (but do not use in the centre as this is where you will making a hole) and carefully punch the hole through the centre of the image and canvas in the correct place. Now match up your clock mechanism and add the hands etc as per your instructions.

Now time to get your Silicone out. :)
Add your chain to your brooch or similar apply a small dot of silicone as shown above.

Gather your chain in a small area and place on top of silcone.  I have used silicone for my decorative fob because it is metal.

Optional - I made a circle of lace to go beneath on of my flowers..

Silicone your pearl beads or similar, then your lace circle if you are using that, your posh pins  then finally your flowers - set aside to dry. :)
Once it is dry - pop your battery into the clock and sit back and admire. :) :)

I do hope you find this tutorial helpful. :)  I sure enjoyed making it. :)

If you have followed this tutorail or taken inspiration from it, we would love to see your finished projects so please do come back and share them with us!

We will see you all on Thursday for some winners and the Top 5 :)
Happy crafting till then!
